Title: Build a PreenFM from PCB with chinese maple clone
Post by: shiftr on November 18, 2012, 12:09:37 AM
So i build the PreenFm from bare PCB with self sourcing and everything is working. At first there was a problem with lots of noise and soft audio but it turned out it was the display shorting something on the PCB... Getting the chinese clone in was a bit tough because it is a difrent size then the normal maple...
I made a case with a lasercutter for free at the FABLAB in Utrecht.
I'll post some pictures when i get a hold of some M2 bolts...

well done.
As you have been there before me, I would be interested in where you sourced the comonents. I am only a few miles from Farnell trade counter but for some US stock they charge 16 GBP to import. Mouser don't.
Also i am very interested in your story of the DIY case. I want a laser cutter...
cheers and regards

I ordered (almost) all components for the PreenFM at RS components. The only problems with it are that for a lot of the smaller stuff you have to buy a bag of say 25... but since i'm building a lot of stuf for me it doesn't really matter. I already had some stuf like the switches and buttoncaps from xoxbox.de

Cutting the case is easy of you have access to a lasercutter... mine is part wood/part plexi.
I'm getting some bolts and nuts tomorow and then i'll post some pictures.

So here is my PreenFM made from a bare PCB and a maple clone from  ebay (http://www.ebay.nl/itm/MAPLE-Mini-Nano-STM32F103CB-ARM-Cortex-M3-Bootloader-Ready-For-Arduino-Maple-IDE-/121021249792?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c2d6db900#ht_766wt_1376)
Case is made from the scrap material pile at the Fablab Utrecht.

The maple clone is a different size as the original. I first put the headers in the 40dip and then put the maple on and soldered it. The clones is also reversed from the original, the buttons and USB are on the bottom side.

Nice!  I like the wooden paneling.  It must have been fun loading the OS with those buttons  :)

Thanks for the pictures and for the feedback.
Very nice  :D

And congrats to have successfully plugged this weird maple clone board in the PCB.

I put the OS on it before i put in in the preen... Even before i build the preen first thing i did was check if i could get the OS on the clone before i ordered the other parts.
