Title: Not recognized as a USB device
Post by: Mmarsh on March 15, 2014, 04:22:58 AM
Hi there -

I've had my PreenFM2 for some time now and it's been great.  The one thing that it has never done is to be recognized as a device via USB.  I have to open the back to get the stick out and put the new firmware on that. I've debugged it a little and I do have a good connection between the twin pins on the board and the USB processor.

Any ideas where I could look to fix this?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

Can you remind me what OS do you use ? Windows ? Mac OSX ? Other ?

Does the midi work over USB ?
 Menu->Tools->Set->Usb Midi:>
"In" or "In/Out"... Reboot if you change the value.

I ask that because it uses the same USB cable for Mass storage and Midi over USB.
I'd like to know if it's a hardware problem or a driver problem.

Hi Xavier -

I've tried it on Mac and on Windows, neither works.  The device is not recognized by the OS.  Here is a dump from the logger in USBProber on my Mac:

Timestamp Lvl     Message
--------- ---   --------------------------------------
0.796 [1]   The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device.
2.096 [1]   The IOUSBFamily is having trouble enumerating a USB device that has been plugged in.  It will keep retrying.  (Port 2 of Hub at 0x14000000)
6.915 [1]   The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device.
8.216 [1]   The IOUSBFamily is having trouble enumerating a USB device that has been plugged in.  It will keep retrying.  (Port 2 of Hub at 0x14000000)
9.515 [1]   The IOUSBFamily gave up enumerating a USB device after 10 retries.  (Port 2 of Hub at 0x14000000)
9.515 [1]   The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device.

Thanks!

Hi Mike,

You say that Mass storage from bootloader does not work.
But you didin't answer "does midi over USB work" ?
I suspect not, but i'd like a confirmation.

Can be a problem with your internal midi cable "PCB -> CERB40 mini USB".
Bad soldering, pin 2 a 3 swap ?
Check with bottom of this page :

No, MIDI over USB does not work, at least not from my computer to the PreenFM.  Since the OS does not recognize it there is no way to send anything to it. I've checked the cable and in fact there is continuity from the pins to the USB processor (i forget the name of it, CERBsomething?) with the cable connected. I'll check the docs as you suggested...

Probably the connections the wrong way around. Took me a few goes to get my cable working.
