Yes, the early ones were not flashed  :)
I now flash them because i found a quick method to do so and helping people who cannot flash can be tricky.

Excellent !! Hope you didnt mind me mentioning it :-)
(I do think it’s an amazing synth - thanks Xavier)

Just one datapoint - my pcb wasn’t flashed either by the way. Not a problem at all as I absolutely didnt expect it to be and wasnt aware you *were* flashing them.... :-)
Unless the flashing is a recent thing (I think mine was a very early one).....

Have you soldered the control board headers? It doesnt look like it from the photos...

Sorry, I won't share the full schema for the moment.

I understand completely !! (The fragment of schematic was enough - thanks !)

I expected it to work without being connected too (and was assuming the USB-GND jumper was to avoid USB noise) !! (Would you be able to share a schematic by any chance ? Happy if it’s via PM and I wont share it - also happy if you dont want to). I just thought I’d try it as your image on the wiki has it connected and I couldnt think of anything else (when connecting over DFU I had been powering via USB and had connected the GND). It wouldnt connect without it jumpered and works fine every time with it jumpered. I still have 5v DC not-jumpered....

Yes, the goal was to avoid noise. But from you experience it seems to be required for Data (i still have to try ;) )
Keep the 5V un-jumpered if you use a DCIn power, that avoids noise and also avoid 5V conflict (from the 7805 and from the USB) !

Sorry, I won't share the full schema for the moment.
Here is the power/jumper part.

Thanks Xavier - that’s really really helpful - I’m sure then that the GND jumper needs to be placed for that schematic... (I’ll leave the +5v jumper off !)

Oh OK. Thanks for the update.
I didn't think about that, and i really expected the USB connection to work without the GND connected, as USB is a single differential pair.

@forestcaver : from what i understand  your problem concerns Midi over USB which does not work.
So that's a totally different problem. You're right : if DFU works then the hardware is OK. It's a driver problem on your machine or on the pfm3.

Hi @Xavier - thanks - got it working on v1.02 - it was user error.... it was my misunderstanding (in the absence of schematics) what the USB-GND jumper did - I had left it off making a silly assumption it was a digital/analog GND-lift to reduce noise from USB GND (I am using a DC power supply to power the pFM3). Once I connected it, it all worked fine. I still have the USB-5V jumper disconnected - not sure if that should be connected as well - I had assumed it disconnected supply *from* the USB. Maybe I should connect it so I can power USB devices. (Does the pFM3 act as a USB host ?)

For both Lokki and me, v0.101 fixed the USB midi problem at 100%. And from what Robrock wrote, it also works for him.
So your problem must be a different one.
Can you try on another computer ?

Hi Xavier - it’s the same on another computer (but that is another macbook pro running the same os version).
PreenFM2 is visible and preenfm3 is visible via dfu but not visible when booted up and running latest fw

9
It doesnt work for me on v0.101 either if that helps ! (I suspect it is a firmware issue as DFU works fine so the hardware is ok)

10
There is a known bug with usb.... Xavier has been looking into it - not sure if yours is the same issue (as it can be seen by the editor)

preenfm2 and preenfm3 / Re: usb midi not working in 0.99b?
« on: December 17, 2020, 10:16:11 PM »
It was flashed ok in DFU mode (was visible each time I set the jumpers to pullup the boot to VCC) so I suspect the soldering of the USB socket is ok (I also checked it under a microscope after cleaning the flux when I built it). It would be odd to be a soldering issue if it can be flashed over USB, wouldnt it ?

I previously checked it was the 0.100z fw (as shown on the screen) when I tested it earlier tonight
I also checked USB Midi was set to In/Out when I tested it earlier.

I wont have time to take it out of the case and examine the soldering again until the weekend.

I have got a development build going with stm32cubeide and have an stlinkv2 so if I get time over the weekend I can also look at debugging but I will double check the soldering...

Unfortunately, I just tried with the latest fw posted on page 2 (0.100z) and it still isnt working for me.

An extra datapoint if it helps:

Just tested my preenFM3 on v100 - I can't see the preenFM3 over USB either. (MacOS 10.15.7, Macbook Pro 13” early 2015)

As a sanity check - same cable, port; Mac sees the PreenFM2 (pcb R6, latest fw) with no problems

Did you set the boot jumper before trying to flash the bootlosder? How are you trying to flash it? I had no joy via a browser and used the dfu toolset... (I also have several stlinks so that is a possibility)

Hello,

I have encountered some issues with the TFT screen in PreenFM3.

On that board it looks like you’ve got at least one cold solder joint (especially the one closest to the mcu) on the tft header which may be more of an issue... it’s also worth getting rid of the flux on the header as well - that may also cause issues. (But it’s a good point about the traces - I use plastic nuts or washes anywhere near traces as well)
