preenfm2 and preenfm3 / Re: new PreenFM2 in Austria :)

Those are the legendary "waldorf" knobs. They aren't stocked anywhere, the MIDIBox people put together a group buy from time to time as they will only make a minimum order quantity (2000?).

What I would do in terms of a translation layer or different editing interface is have starting points, string, lead, bass, organ and so on. Then have tonal parameters, harmonics etc.

I had similar issues (the sound faded out on start up) and resoldered some joints to resolve it. Just double check the soldering and resolder and you should be okay.

For a 'transition layer' you'd have to determine what operator played what part and was important based on the output.  Sounds like a significant amount of work.  :)

True, but it is the one thing that keeps people on subtractive and makes them scared of FM.

It's too complex for ordinary people.

What FM editors need is two modes. The RAW edit mode where you have the full power of FM exposed and a more friendly interface where there is some sort of translation layer.

For the translation layer you would load a bass preset (for example) and then tweak it using parameters with more friendly terms, then the raw settings would get changed behind the scenes.

Indeed. They have the advantage of being able to charge or power numerous things, unlike a second phone battery in your pocket.

There's lots of battery packs designed for recharging mobile phones that may work.

If you have a spare one you could open it up?

There's usually some metal tabs that you can bend up to take them apart. They're very simple inside.

For my MB-6582 I did this to remove the clicking detent of the encoders so the knobs behave more like pots.

Step 10 on this page shows opening encoders:

True, but I imagine the FS1R has a lot of tricks. Yamaha continued where they had left off with FM.

The whole analog/digital argument probably is less important with FM as there's never been any mass market analog FM of any complexity.

The FS1R is a good 12-14 years old now and was never that popular, it was just too hard to edit with the front panel.

Cut up IC sockets might work as well :)

The Yamaha FS1R had filtering, it was a sort of format/FM synth.

Well the Preen engine would run on the Maple Mini, but I see what you mean. You need to add all of the editing facilities to the software in the main ATMega and rework the UI to suit the display shape.

The biggest problem is if there's room in the ATMega for all that.

Could be handy. But any FM synthesis purist would say you don't filter FM sounds :) but to hell with them.

It wouldn't be hard from a software point of view, but the Maple Mini is rather large and tall and it would probably need a change to use a proper DAC to save space? One small chip rather than a few?
