Ah nice, that could work, what is the file format? I think my display is placed slightly lower/different then the one by xavier, so I will likely have to readjust parts of the case/file

Happy to report that one of your solutions did work!

The ribbon was too long! With a shorter one it works absolutely reliably. Great.

When should the top LED light up? Up until now I only had the 5 connections anyways because I figured the rest was not needed (breakout for later use)

Did you see my post in the general pfm2 pfm3 thread? It would be great to have a 100% pdf of the top and back part of the enclosure. That way I could print that out and use it as a drill template for my enclosure...

Thanks!

preenfm2 and preenfm3 / [Solved] preenfm3 controller board acting funny
« on: November 20, 2020, 11:35:51 PM »
hi there,

i am in the process of getting my preenfm3 into a case and i have a very strange problem. i will first list the symptoms and later things i already tried...

all was working fine until yesterday. it has to be said that i did not use a header but a short ribbon cable to connect the two boards.

when i put the mainboard and the control board together with 4 screws, the controls did start to act funny.
-turning an encoder would sometimes not adjust any values, sometimes 3 or 4 at once, with values jumping all over the place.
-pressing buttons results in either no reaction or a white-screen or a screen with coloured lines (segments). the screen usually reboots and displays normally again.

so i took the controlboard off again because i though one of the ribbon cable connections had become loose. holding the controlboard at a certain angle made it working normally again which made me think it was indeed a loose connection.

so i redid the solder on those connections, no change. ok i thought one of the cables has gone bad. replaced the ribbon cable, same behaviour. i measured with a multimeter from controlboard to mainboard and all points are connected.

one thing i did notice when the boards arrived in the mail was that the mainboard was slightly bent, it had a slight curvature. putting the controlboard and the mainboard together may have forced that curvature to become flatter i guess and could maybe have broken some connections on the mainboard?

are any of these symptoms familiar to you? can i somehow test if the mainboard is intact? any other ideas?

hi xavier,

would it be possible to publish a pdf file of the top (and ideally back) part of the case? i will make my own case from wood and aluminium and could use a drilling template. or are there any free programs to export the stl files to pdf? some online tools i tried failed to produce any result.

I agree that it would be nice to choose different kind of noises, but maybe not dynamically but static per preset....

On a normal subtractive synth you change the color of the noise with a lp or bandpass filter...or do you really mean the color of the noise, like white, brown noise etc? I see little use in changing that dynamically...

This is indeed almost unbelievable...i will check the pictures of my order, but I suspect it is the sameas Oliviers

The display I bought clearly stated that it is Arduino 5v compatible, the sdlines run directly from the connector via a resistor to the SPI pins, so they have to be for level shifting somehow. (Since Arduino sends out 5v logic).

With 3.3v logic you don't get the right levels I suppose. Unfortunately I can't easily measure, since I have soldered the display to the preenfm3 directly (will make my own smaller case...more later :)

Next week i will try my screen with 3,3Volts instead of 5 Volts. I hope the built-in SD card will work.

So is the screen running at 5v on the preenfm3? I assumed 3.3v but did not yet take measurements...

I think all those sdcard problems come from the fact, that these displays are designed to be run on a 5v Arduino and include resistor dividers as level shifters instead of proper ICs. Probably one could simply solder jumper wires directly from the 4 sdpins to the sdcard slot and it would work. Maybe the three smd resistors would have to be removed.

i would definitely start by just reheating all the preenf405 socket connections. remove the preenf405 first then reheat all the connections on the sockets, make sure they make good clean solder blops. do you have a multimeter?

did you solder the preenf405 headers on your own? this would be my next guess for failure.

The size is actually 2.8" but with a different pcb, so the sdcard pins don't align right? I am not sure what your problem is? Can you describe again what you want to do and where it fails?

Got it working. As I suspected it was the sdreader on that display module that was faulty. For testing I simply soldered a SD to micro sd adapter to the corresponding PINs on the preenfm3,since I found out that sd cards are directly SPI compatible...

Guess my preenfm3 will be accepting microSD from now on :)

it is totally black (no backlight), as soon as i put in the sdcard. and as soon as i take it out it goes all white.
pressing menu does not help it stays white (i am on 0.90 now but will update again to 0.91 and try as well)

and another sdcard does not fix this...

but, the blue led on the main pcb blinks, even when the screen stays black, maybe that tells you something?

can i just attach another microsd card modul with SPI and 3.3v logic?

hmm, the screen still stays black even with the folder on the sdcard...

will try a different sdcard. or maybe the reader is really broken on the screen
