PreenFM1 (the blue one) / Re: flashing firmware from a mac?
« on: February 07, 2012, 09:35:43 PM »
Ok so turns out that was a red herring. I did find a way to install dfu-util, but doing so required X-Code to be installed (which in turn requires a $100 apple dev license). LAME. So I just set up a windows virtual machine on VMWare and that did the trick. :p Suck it Steve. In the end I did get it flashed and everything looks great! I say looks, because the dood at the electronics shop missed the din5 and audio jack on the BOM last week.  8) Gotta go pick those up tomorrow.

Next stop is setting up a linux machine so I can play around with building and modifying the code base. :) I'd love to contribute to the project somehow, although I expect most of the programming to be way out of my league haha. Maybe with some enclosure enhancements though. :D

If anyone gets the firmware flash from OSX figured out I'd love to hear about it here.

ah ok sweet. that's exactly what I needed.

Here's the link for any future mac users. http://www.handheld-linux.com/wiki.php?page=Openmoko%20Flasher

Even has a nice GUI ;)

I'll post my results in the morning. Time to make a baby go to sleep :D

PreenFM1 (the blue one) / Re: USB power supply only ?

I was thinking that might work. Why is the power supplied by USB actually? I guess so that the board does not need to have a transformer or other power regulation circuit?

Might be a good addition for an R4 board. :D

PreenFM1 (the blue one) / flashing firmware from a mac?
« on: February 04, 2012, 05:46:23 PM »
So I finally got the board put together and it looks great! My solder skills are also a bit crap though haha.
Since I sourced most of my own parts I don't have the pre-flashed maple mini. Has anyone tried getting the firmware on the board from a mac yet? I see on the leaf labs site that I can DL the IDE, but I'm not sure that's what I need really.

I have access to a PC at the school I work at, but that means I have to wait until Wednesday to flash it. :)

Cheers!

On the Mac there is Sysex Librarian which is really simple but nice.

There is also Midi Quest which is a giant stinky pile of crap I would not recommend.

PreenFM1 (the blue one) / Working on a sheet metal enclosure. :)
« on: January 22, 2012, 12:54:29 PM »
So I bought just the PCB and hard-to-find parts from Xavier and now I've got all the rest of the parts sourced.
I found a company here (prague) that does water jet cutting of sheet metal, so I'm now developing a metal enclosure case for Preen :) It's a bit slow going due to a new baby :D but once it's done I'll post up the drawing here for anyone else to use.

I'm trying to make it a single flat-cut sheet that can be bent by hand. It will also have wooden side panels.

« on: December 17, 2011, 11:15:15 AM »
ya that sounds like there is a short someplace. The PCBs look really high quality though, so I doubt if it's a fabrication error. Maybe there is a horsey solder bead somewhere?

The maple basically just sends serial data to the driver built into the LCD, so it it gets garbled during transmission due to a short or bad connection, the LCD has no way of realizing it has munged data and displays it anyways. That's why you get odd characters.

Also I noticed that the kit LCD is backlit. Will it work with a non-backlit one as well?

ok perfect. :)

Thanks a ton.

ah ok. Is there a way to load the firmware then without having to compile all the code from source? I don't have a linux box. :(

Replied.

I might be posting here for some tips on building the code as well. :)

Thanks!

Hi everyone,

Preen looks amazing! I love little boxes like this. :D

Is there any chance of selling the PCBs loose from the whole kit? Or possibly the components + PCB? I'd love to build one in my own case.

Great project!
