Wow!

Great work!

Hi.

Replay from Van Daal :)

That Red Wima is 1n. They should be the best you can get at that price.
You should also Pay attention to the Screen Shield.
MIDI cabling/connector is different.
Pin headers, place only what you actually need. There is not enough to solder all the pinheaders, because you dont need them.
Look through the video posted under Van Daal shop DIY kit page.

Good luck!

 Hi.

Are you using midi in and out together?
Might be ground issue.

Hello,

I am a representative from Van Daal electronics.
Can you send me your order number, then I can track down the history.

Spacers are 14mm m3 or m2,5. Steel/Brass/plastic.
But you dont have to use the M metric winding. You could buy 8 screws and 4 spacers in what ever standard.

Hi.

We have now had some time to test the noise issues.

Some remarks:
We have tested various inductors, to look for a low-noise unit that may have some better characteristics. No success in practice.

We have stopped producing and adding the metal sheet behind the screen. It shields the noise from the audio, but produces a new issue. Physical noise in the unit.

So the new Rev2 solution is a Aliuminium tape + coppertape with soldered cable and grounded + Plastic tape for isolation.
A Grounding cable will give you better shielding properties.

We are now basically following Xavier solution except added a GND cable.

preenfm2 and preenfm3 / Yamaha Sysex files for DX5
« on: April 26, 2017, 08:14:20 AM »
Hello,

I have seen people asking about the sysex files and PreenFM.
I have an opportunity to work with a Yamaha DX5.

It was broken and not functional.
I have managed to restore most of it. So now its playing and its a gem.
But I have some trouble getting the factory sysex files as the memory was corrupted on this one.

Do you know if there is a patch available of the original DX5 soundbanks?
I can upload them over MIDI. I have no cartridges.
The interface is still a bit confusing to test it out so it would be easy to have the factory sounds available.

Thanks!
Ardi.

What firmware are you running?

How did you wire the Case?
Do you have a shielding on the metal case or its floating?

See if you are delivering enough voltage to the unit. Voltage Overhead distortion.

See if you have a correct opamps used.
See if you have the same distortion with a 9V PSU.
It might be related to many different things, but theese will be a first easy check.

Hi Bryan,

Post the calibration issue here also.
Xavier can dig into it and give you a response.

About the save issue.
It might be a faulty USB stick or maybe i has come loose.
See if you can load a patch?

I can make woodsides for thouse who can drill their enclosures.
If you dont have a drill to makes holes to the bottom part. Then you will need to buy the bottom+wood.

Wood is cut as we speak. So it will be available soon.

preenfm2 and preenfm3 / Re: Balanced outputs
« on: October 07, 2016, 02:34:43 PM »
I think your main issue is the ground.
No synth provides a real ground lifted balanced signal. This requires a signal transformer. Active circuits can also be used to tame it.

So even if your other synths have a Balanced out, they defenetly will not have transformer isolated outputs. So its a electronically balanced, but this will not provide a proper signal isolation. The only thing it does, is if you run very long cables, 20m and more, it will reduce cable noise.
If you have 5m well shielded cable, then there is no difference in signal quality.

If you run very long wires, try it with a 1m cable and see if it still is noisy, if it is, you have an issue with something else and balanced output will not solve it.
A transformer based output might solve it, a DI box will help.

OT:
Its a very hot topic in sound studios, where they think that everything has to be balanced because otherwise the quality of the signal is reduced. But never people realy think about the way all the Hardware is manipulation the signal, they are all doing it in unbalanced way.
So you have a cable in - balanced/ audio manipulation - unbalanced/ cable out - balanced.
Only real benefit for doing it is transformer based isolation for the ground and +/- noise cancelation. But the Noise cancelation actually only works for the noise that is generated inside the cable. How real is that if you have a small studio, you have a cable that is producing noise? Go buy a new cable, it costs only 100 times less than the balancing circuit.
