Title: Just one thing I would like to say
Post by: pser on January 12, 2014, 01:42:20 AM
I have just solder and mount the PreenFM2, I am stunned and very satisfied with the sound it generate. There are as mention in another thread some noise on some of the DX7 SYX, but Xavier a great synth you've made!

Yes i can totally confirm this. PreenFM2 sounds wicked and has one of the best interfaces for FM-tweaking. Since building this 2 days ago, i've already made a few percussive combos and few bass patches.

How it sounds (apart of echoes):

First, percussive combo was sequenced and sampled with octatrack from mixer, then played from octatrack + 2 new instruments (cycled clang + metallic chords).

Gonna make a few feature requests later btw.

Thank you Xavier!

Wow! Really nice sounds! I must learn how to program FM synths better... Still struggling with getting the intuition for tweaking fm.

Here is Renoise sequencing 4 instruments of PreenFM2 via USB Midi (produced some noise) then signal was routed to 2 mono outputs, one for bass and one for everything else + send to echo. Then whole mix was sent to soundcard input and recorded.

You're getting noise when using USB MIDI? are you using a USB cable with RF suppressors?

do you mean this rolls on the ends?  :D

Yeah, those big cannister things on the cable. They should filter out any noise.

Nice track  :)
Can i add it on the soundcloud PreenFM2 tracklist ?

Can you give more info about the USB midi noise ?
Is the noise still here when you turn down a little the volume ?
I would double check the soldering around the 4 * 220uF electrolytic caps.
And do you have a picture of the background to see how is your usb cable ?

Sure, feel free :) You should upload it by yourself tho, cause i have no soundcloud account.

I replaced a cable with newer one and noise is gone. Nonetheless, i gonna get 9V DC power supply cause i prefer to be more autonomous from pc

Anyway, USB midi works like a charm via all 4 channels and it is good

One more question, do i have to consider polarity of wall power supply somehow? Mine goes with removable heads for various devices and i can select polarity by side, this head attached to wire.

Center pin is positive in nearly every device these days (Preen included).

There is a protection diode to prevent damage if you get it wrong.

Since it's using a linear regulator, the excess power is emitted as heat. So it will run cooler if you are just above the minimum required voltage. Given it is a 7805 it needs 7v minimum.

OK, got it.
Thanks!
