Title: New PreenFM2 user, old PreenFM2
Post by: bigsofty on April 29, 2017, 12:43:31 AM
Hi,

Glad to say that I am a new PreenFM2 (hi!) owner. Picked one up on Ebay but the seller did not really give an honest description IMHO. "Excellent condition, all up to date).

The little box is in need of some severe TLC.

First the bootloader is at 1.10.
The firmware is at 1.B7.

Hardware wise things are not perfect.

The volume pot is wobbly and there's a humming noise on the line outs.
The volume level is a little erratic and can "crackle" randomly when adjusted.

Any advice to fix the above would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Sammy

Hi Sammy,

Firmware 1.B7 ? Ouch !
Flashing the firmware is the first thing you should do.
Download latest firmware 2.07, put it on the USB stick (can be done without opening it with firmware 1.10) and flash it.
It's explained here : http://ixox.fr/preenfm2/manual/upgrade-firmware/

The very first version of the preenfm2 had a volume that can be noisy when you turn it.

Do you power it through USB ?
If yes, try an other one, some are noisy.

Hi Xavier, thanks for the help.

I'll do that first.

The very first version of the preenfm2 had a volume that can be noisy when you turn it.

Ah, no problem, I intend to control it mainly via midi so it's not too much of a big deal.

Yes I do, via a hub, ill try it via the PC itself.

Thanks again Xavier, I've been after a PreenFM for quite a long time and I've got to say it was worth the wait! :)

Cheers,

Sammy

Still got the hum.  >:(

I will order some new jack leads via Amazon to see if that helps. The ones I have were pretty cheap.

Can anyone recommend a decent make that is reasonably priced?

Cheers,

Have you tried with a standalone USB power supply such as one for tablet/smartphone ?
Or with a 9V power supply ?

You can plug directly a headset to one of the audio output to check the sound quality.

Hmmm, that's a couple of very good ideas Xavier, thanks I will try them tomorrow after work.

I already ordered some "Hosa" cables as they were recommended by a friend. If your suggestions fix the problem then they will be spare. You can never get enough patch cables anyways IMHO. ;)

Cheers,
