Title: PreenFM3 case options
Post by: Kyg on April 21, 2021, 10:21:09 AM
Hi,

I’m interested in building a PreenFM3 using the kit from Xavier with faceplate but without the rest of the case.

Commercial services for 3D printing the rest of the case are expensive at around €140 in Germany.

Is there an inexpensive solution for side and back panels to go with the faceplate provided in Xavier's kit?

I know of the Van Daal metal case but would much prefer a black enclosure.

I’m completely new to the DIY synth world and would be glad for any advice about case options!

Thanks!
Phil

Thanks for your reply!

I have not seen a black case for the PreenFM3 on Van Daal's website. Maybe an option for the black case will pop up when the cases are back in stock. I will keep an eye on that!

Thanks!
Phil

140€ for the case ??????
The cost of filament is around 2€.
You can have a 3D printer for 140€ :)

I just found that:

It seems 3DHubs offer the possibility to have your printing done by someone else.

It should be also possible to build a plexi laser cut  for sites such as ponoko.com or formulor.de.

Thanks for your replies!

I emailed Van Daal two days ago and am waiting for a reply.

I was wondering about online Plexi glass / acrylic laser cutting services but assumed that might be expensive as well. I will check prices!

I’m also considering having just the back plate 3D printed, which would cost about €35 by itself and then buy an acrylic sheet and cut the easier side and bottom plates myself. I think that might be a solution for me.

35€ for the 3D printed rear part ??
I that's what would cost a full acrilyc laser cut enclosure.

I've started a design for acrylic laser cut instead of 3D printing some times ago but never finished it.
Looks like that could be usefull.
3D printing is much more convenient for me as i can have the result quickly and for very cheap at home :)

I have zero experience with acrylic laser cutting and didn’t know it might be so cheap.

I think I saw that someone on this forum has created files for a complete PreenFM3 acrylic case. I didn’t give it much attention, as I was primarily looking for a solution to go with the faceplate provided with your (Xavier's) kit.

It would definitely be helpful to people like me to have alternative case solutions to 3D printing.

There is also a ready design for the PreenFM3, it's made for acrylic,
but it is also adaptable for 3D printing.

But it's not designed for the front plate from the kit, I don't remember if
there was one when I designed it. You would have to adapt the design to fit it correctly.
