preenfm2 and preenfm3 / new build LCD lit but blank - (Solved)

Just finished building the PreenFM2 and it fired up 1st time.  I used an LCD instead of OLED. The LCD is lit, but blank.  I went back and checked all connections and then also put a 10k trimmer in for RV1 since I have the LCD(thought that could be the problem).  I checked the jumpers, I have jumpers on 1 and 2 but not 3.  I am using a compatible HD44780 LCD.  I am using USB power only.  The unit is making sounds and I can change them but I am doing so blind.  Any thoughts what else I can try?
