thanks xavier... one more question - is the screen easily swappable?
(slightly ashamed to say that i bought my preenfm2 ready-built)

Very easily... but you'll need to cut and solder this header to your display:
https://www.sparkfun.com/products/117
Then it can be inserted instead of the other LCD display.

you can dump the current patch to pc using save_syx_Send patch, obviously using c6 or similar. and you can load these patches to preenfm2 using c6 to send it.

Right...

To upload, you can also use C6.
But most DAW allow you to drag and drop a sysex file on a track and will send it to the track output.

Here's my attempt at a handclap sound. Not very convincing.. :(
This is an export from the PreenFM2 editor. Not sure what suffix it should have, though. Is it .syx, or something else?
a|x

Editor export can only be loaded by the editor.

The easiest way to share presets is to switch to booloader mode, press "ENG" and the USB drive should be visible from your computer.
Manage your banks from here (upload /download).
Tip : add "_" (underscore) as first character to make it read-only from the preenfm (check the number of chars is still 8 or less).

You can also save your "DfltCmbo.pfm" file (the default combo which is loaded when you boot).

@kuzma_p is your PFM2Perc.mp3 file pfm2 only ? I really like it.

Thanks for this thread  :D

Claps are kinda tricky since there is no delay on the start of the envelopes.

I'm not sure how you'll try to achieve clap sound but you can add a delay to any enveloppe.
Just set Attk lvl to 0.  And use Decay as Attack, and sustain as decay.
Enveloppes have 4 generic points with target level and duration on each.

I made a quick loop of some Preen drums..

Awesome work.... Thanks for sharing.

The preen can do huge kicks.  Unlike the DX7, the envelopes are really fast and you can modulate pitch on each operator separately.

A basic kick is two separate parts so find an algo with 2 separate pairs of fm operators {can't remember the number).

The boom of the kick is a sine with fixed frequency at around 70hz.   No attack and sustain, short decay and release.  Set the extra envelope1 to modulate the pitch on op1.  Set it to no attack or sustain and even shorted decay and release and set the depth to something quite high.  This should give the basic kick sound.  Use can add in a little fm for flavour and grit.  Tweak the envelope decays and pitch envelope depth to taste.

The second oscillator pair will add the beater.   This is the click sound at the start of the kick.  It is called "attack" on a 909.   Set both fixed frequency waves around 1khz with a fair bit modulation.  Set the envelope to no attack, sustain and release and use a really really short decay.  Basically this should generate a click sound.  Adjust the decay and the modulation amount until you like it.  Set the volume of the click lower than the boom.

Add the bass bost filter.  You could map the volume, boom decay, bass boost frequency and click level to p1..p4 which would give similar controls to 909 kick.

Thanks for this  :D

First of all how do you guys use it standalone? Do you connect the usb port and a midi keyboard to input notes via the midi input?
I get a lot of stuck notes this way and sometimes changing a parameter dont do anything.

Using USB, select "preenfm" in midi output and input should do the trick.
If you're keyboard send the same midi on din5 at the same time, that can lead to stuck notes.

Second one is i cant get the VST version to work. My Cubase doesnt recognise it as a plugin. Maybe i use the wrong .dll file.
Whats the msvcp110.dll file??
greez Max

It was required with Editor 0.3 which was compiled in "windodws XP" compatibility mode.
But that did not work great.
I'll check but i'm almost sure i compiled Editor 0.4 without this compatiblity mode so this library should be useless.
Did you use the right 32 or 64 bits dll compatible with your Cubase.... I don't have cubase to try.

preenfm2 and preenfm3 / Re: Modulating cutoff for the bandpass filter
« on: August 26, 2014, 01:45:33 PM »

It's a know limitation.
Because changing the BP middle frequency requires several heavy operation, so i didn't want to make it change all the time with a modulator.
I think i'll change that.

....can it do the early 21, 27, 100 4 Op thing as well as DX-7 6 Op thing is what I am getting at...

The preenfm2 has also some 3 and 4 operators algorithms... In adition any 6 operators algo can be turned into 5/4/3/2/1 operators algo by silencing the not-used operators.

I wouldn't recommand the preenfm2 to replace any DX* or TX* synths.

But keep in mind, it's small, has midi over USB, has stereo at carrier operator level, 2 step sequencers per timbre, much more modulation possiblities, a powerfull arpegiator, and HP/LP/BP filters  ;)
And it's easy to build. It has been built by several people as their first DIY project.

Thanks for the feedback...  :D

Feedback is not easy to add and in adition is less usefull when you have the choice between waveform for each operator... which was not the case on the DX7.
Also at the maximum polyphony CPU usage is not far from 100%, so it's hard to add features at the oscillator level.

The sound difference is more due to the internal engine. The DX7 is very hard to emulate closely. Take a look at hexter code to see what i mean.
Also phase / frequency difference make the spectrum totally different as soon as you have 3 cascading operator or more.
So some DX7 sound sounds good others not.

Yeah i know, i must find time to add a randomizer  ;)
