I meant, like if you looked at MIDI out of the beat step on a MIDI monitor program, what data is sent out the output port.

@Synthusiast what midi events does Beatstep Pro transmit when you hit record?

I'm not positive if this is what you mean but when I press record on the beatstep pro the only change on the Preen is the OP1 frequency increases to 10.5 for ON and back to zero when I press it again to turn rec OFF.

On the beatstep pro when I hit rec it allows me to record what notes I'm playing on the beatstep in real time instead step sequencing it.

It depends on the algorithm you chose. For example, for Algo 1, operator 1's envelope would be your traditional VCA envelope. However, the operator envelopes for operators 2 and 3 would just effectively change the modulation index of the respective operator.

So if you wanted to make a pad using algorithm 1, set op 1's attack and release to be slow with a reasonable amount of sustain and use the envelopes of operators 2 and 3 to change the amount of FM over time, for example, by setting them to somewhat different values than operator 1's envelope.

I suggest using the Preen FM editor, it makes this very visual and you can see a bunch of the parameter at the same time.

Hope that helps.

This is a great idea. I also like the idea of the second env menu.

Thank you for pointing to the section of code. It is helpful. I'll see what I can do to try and knock together an attempt.

You have some good points regarding optimization.

Regarding sound, the most recent example I can think of is the Korg op six has this exact feature. I'll see if I can find a good sample of it.

I have a feature request.
It would be cool if we could modulate the "width" of the operator waveforms. Almost like modulating a pulse width of a square wave. So for example, per cycle, a sine wave would complete 360 degrees faster and the remainder of the period could be a DC signal of zero. At 50% the sine would complete within the time it used to take to do 180 degrees and the remaining 180 degrees would be an amplitude of zero (it could look like W5 for the TX81z). Having this as a modulation target would be cool. This is great for making some modern sounds.

of note, 3.1.4 does work, but as a MIDI effect.

I'm not sure why, but this newest version seem to crash the AU validation in LOGIC X.

I just tried everything over V3.0 (AU version) and anything over V3.0 seems to crash my AU validation. I had not noticed previously because I use the stand alone editor most of the time. (apparently since V2.12)

Just checked and V 2.12 works fine in LogicX.

I am running OS X 10.12.6.

@Xavier
That is what I was thinking.
It still mostly works in Logic. I think the norm is show as synth for a plugin like this. At least thats how all the other synth MIDI editors I have show up in Logic.

It seems like the most recent version(s) seems to show up in the MIDI plugins instead of the software instrument plugins in Logic.

@Toltekradiation and @ Xavier you guys are amazing!! keep up the great work. :-)

@solipsvs if you look at the code, for example, the decay segment is exponential.
The representations in the editor are not the actual shape of the slope of each segment.

However, it would be cool to have different response curves (linear, expo, and/or log) for each segment.

I was coming across the saturation, I just dial down the sends or the instrument levels.

Maybe insert a limiter before the reverb.

Feature request: If you ever get a chance to add a pitch shifter in a feedback loop to the reverb with variable attenuation and pitch (Shimmer), that would be cool.

cool. Just installed and played with it a little and it seems to work well.
