PreenFM1 (the blue one) / Finished module with "reversing" encoders
« on: February 02, 2013, 07:02:06 PM »
Hi all. There was a time, and I ended up the module with "reversing" encoders. Little altered author hull design (in fact, had to make a new drawing.) Different halves of the side and rear panel is parallel to the connectors. Also decided to completely close the display by protective "glass" screen.
Had to work to experiment with modes of cutting and engraving laser engraver to find the optimal mode because up to this point has never had to work with acrylics. Special difficulty caused toning engraved sings.
After studying the experience of experts in engraving I found that the best solution is rubbing acrylic paint with a rubber spatula, then allow to dry for 1 hour and then soaking water and the removal of unnecessary residues of paint with the aid of a wooden or plastic scraper. During the day there comes the final polymerization of paint.
Huge selection of colors available in the shops for artists, including metallic paint type.
I hope that someone useful in my experience, is ready to shell out more photos and drawing files.

PreenFM1 (the blue one) / Cheaper chinese clone of Maple mini.
« on: August 27, 2012, 02:15:59 PM »
I tried the cheaper chinese clone of Maple mini: http://www.aliexpress.com/product-fm/503134004-Free-shipping-ST-STM32-Cortex-M3-Maple-Mini-wholesalers.html
This is not working properly. First it was not possible to install the driver, the system will indicate that it is not appropriate for the product. Second LED by pressing the reset button did not blink, and is constantly on. Checking the quality of installation and the appropriate circuit device revealed no defects.
Then I tried to re-flash the device to perform as described on leaflabs website using UART adapter but could not understand how to work with Python libraries so used GUI flasher for Windows on ST site. With this program, I did a global erase the device and put firmware file maple_mini_boot.bin to the device. After that, the device manager successfully detected device that came drivers.
Then flash the device on the procedure described on preenfm site by using mini USB cable.
Of course, perhaps the time taken to find a solution is not worth the gain in value compared with the original device, however in my opinion the price of the original device is an exaggeration, is close in value to the development board   :P

PreenFM1 (the blue one) / Encoders question
« on: August 16, 2012, 09:48:44 AM »
Hi all!
The author uses encoders PEC11-4220F-N0024.
They have the following specification:
Pulses per Revolution    24 PPR
Number of Detents    24
Number of Channels
Mounting Style    SMD/SMT
Termination Style
Output    2-bit Gray Code
Shaft Type    Metal Flatted
With Switch    Without

Can I use these encoders: This item 140739970480 on ebay?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/10pcs-12mm-Rotary-Encoder-Switch-Keyswitch-NEW-/140739970480?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20c4c185b0

They have the following specification:
* Rotary Shaft Length: Approx. 12mm
* Shaft Full Length: Approx. 20mm
* Shaft Diameter: Approx. 6mm
* Size (L x W): Approx. 15 x 11mm
* Output: 2-bit gray code
* Closed Circuit Resistance: 3 ohms maximums
* Max. Rating: 10 mA @ 5 VDC
* Operating Temperature Range: -30 to 70 degrees celsius
* Storage Temperature Range: -40 to 85 degrees celsius
* Rotational Life: 30000 cycles minimum
* Switch Life: 20000 cycles minimum

In the specification there is no information on the number of Detents and pulses. Having made a full turn, I found that the number of Detents is 20.
I understand that the main difference between them is 20 Detents, rather than 24 and the presence of a tact switch.
