PreenFM2 / Re: Alternate Voice Assign mode?
« on: October 07, 2018, 04:22:58 AM »
I was just reading this great interview with Mark Fell about his work with FM synthesis and this passage stood out:

For example, I had a Yamaha TX81Z, which uses four-operator FM synthesis and had a few quirks to it. There was this mode, which rather than being multitimbral was like a multitimbral setup, but every time you press the note to progress to the next sound in the series of sounds that you specify. So every time you played a note it could produce not just a series of notes but a series of sound changes as well. So I just did loads of work with that, setting up simple sequences of sound changes and note changes that would go in and out of phase and things. That became one of the kinds of techniques that I still use today.

Reading the manual for the TX81Z, this seems to be a reference to the Alternate Voice Assign mode that "allows you to play a different voice with each successive note". Would it be possible to have a function like this on the PreenFM, perhaps running through each patch in a combo when engaged?

This would be amazing! Super on board, but would probably be a pain to implement (I imagine...)

PreenFM2 / Re: High frequency tone coming from hardware itself!
« on: July 24, 2018, 05:09:08 AM »
Hi! I've seen plenty of people in this forum complain about a high frequency tone coming from the audio out of their preenfm2, but I couldn't find any thread related to this issue...
Is there anything I can do about this?

Hi,

The main thread is here :

Xavier

Sorry about that, I saw the topic post and that you mentioned "audio path" and thought it was only about the audio-based tone, not the hardware one. My apologies for the redundant thread.

PreenFM2 / High frequency tone coming from hardware itself!

Hi! I've seen plenty of people in this forum complain about a high frequency tone coming from the audio out of their preenfm2, but I couldn't find any thread related to this issue, being that there is a high pitched tone coming from the hardware itself! The tone isn't very loud, but it's definitely audible as soon as it's powered on, even if the audio out isn't plugged into anything.

Is there anything I can do about this? It's my only complaint I have about the preenfm, and if I could solve this it would be perfect.

If it helps, I have a preenfm2 with an OLED screen from Van Daal Electronics.

Thanks a bunch :)

seem to work great! will update if any issues found. thanks again :D

PreenFM2 / Re: [Im5] and mix parameters missing from mod matrix
« on: April 06, 2018, 02:23:45 AM »

I first tried to keep reasonable the number of matrix destinations.

The number of sound when you need to modify independentaly each of the 6 mixes through the matrix must not been huge.

IM5 could be usefull though.

Just curious, has there been any update on adding IM5 to the matrix? Thanks :)

Hey stelpa,

Isn't FTune what you're looking at ?
Or maybe being able to change with more precision Freq ? so that you can chose something like 0.99 ?

Mod Matrix using midi note number is actually a good way to do that   :)

Yeah, I was referring to Freq - Mod Matrix works, just not super exact :P

and here is the "standard" firmware with all the additions mentioned in the above post. have fun!

Hey Lokki - I hate to bother you again, but would it be possible to update these firmwares to version 2.08b, as the envelope problem seems pretty nasty. If not, could you tell me what modifications to make so I can attempt figuring out how to compile myself?

Thanks a bunch, again I'm sorry for bothering.

Hi,

http://ixox.fr/preenfm2/manual/synth-edit-mode/
Part 2 - Operators.
The preenfm2 does offer frequency key tracking per operator through the 3 parameters : "FType", "Freq" and "Ftune".
So i don't understand what you mean.

Xavier

Hey Xavier - I just revisited this thread when looking through old posts and realized that I misunderstood what you said - what I was asking about was the ability to change key "scaling" - In other words, "stretching" or "compressing" the tuning of a single oscillator, instead of just transposing. Essentially this would make one of the oscillators 'out of tune' with the others - on the blofeld, this allows for some really crazy timbres.

The solution I've found in the mean time to achieve this is to use the mod matrix, mapping the note parameter to an osc's frequency, but I'm not sure which sort of scaling to use. It'd be cool if it were implemented without the mod matrix but that would require a new page... Still lots of fun with the mod matrix though :D

Hey Lokki! I hope I didn't seem rude not responding to such a kind thing, making a custom firmware - I simply had no idea you responded until I found this post by chance, I never received a notification!

Just wanted to let you know that both the new firmwares are working great, thank you so much for doing that! PreenFM has such a lovely userbase :)

Thanks again

hi stelpa,

what features were you hoping for?

global midi channel and hertz mode already are in 2.08.

program change mod would be easy to readd, EDIT: a quick try with usercc failed since xavier changed somethings in that regard...
USERCC is readded, easy enough :-)
that being said, i'm working on some new extensions, currently on the 8timbres branch. will be easy to remerge into the standard firmware.

features coming:

-global tune (tune the preenfm from 435 to 444 hertz)
-constant value for the matrix which enables you to transpose instruments by applying a constant to o*fq...
-program change mod is still there :-)

Oh, I didn't realize those features had been added to 2.08, they weren't mentioned in the changelog I don't think. That's awesome! I'd love if USERCC was re-added, and global tune sounds very nice, but I think I'll use the 2.08a version in the meantime - I was mostly looking for hertz mode, so that's good to know that it's still there. Thanks Lokki :)

Has this been updated to the most recent version (2.08a)? New editing features were added in 2.08, and version 2.08a fixed a bug with MIDI ccs. I wanted to know if this version of the OS was up to date, and whether it still had the bug or not. If it is not up to date, would it be possible for you to update it?

Thanks a ton for your hard work, lokki :D

Ahh, you are right! I'm sorry, it just slipped my mind since it wasn't labelled as such. Thanks for all your hard work :)

PreenFM2 / [Solved] [Feature Requeust] Per-Op Keytracking?
« on: December 06, 2016, 02:09:47 PM »
I have been playing with my Blofeld, and though it's FM is limited (only 3 ops), it has the great feature of variable keytracking setting per oscillator ("Op"). This allows lots of metallic tones and interesting modulations, and would expand the microtonal capabilities of PreenFM2 even further. What do you all think? :)
