preenfm2 and preenfm3 / Re: Richard D. James mentions Preen FM
« on: November 15, 2016, 11:18:11 AM »
Haha... Thanks for sharing.
I've just read again an email discussion i had with a "R. James" about scala and microtuning.
The email he used also point to pages that talk about him when i google it ;)

Do you have a link to this comment ?

Sorry i don't know.
Except measuring it and buying the right one i don't know what to say.

The one i put in the kits are provided with the jacks.

preenfm2 and preenfm3 / Re: Replacement Buttons/Knobs
« on: October 28, 2016, 08:49:14 AM »
Unfortunately they don't stick out at all. They are completely flush with the metal case. As for encoders can i use any replacement encoders?

That's not normal.
Seems like the PCB and the top panel are not closely enough screwed.
Is the OLED screen blocking ?
Could you send a picture of the OLED headers and a one that show the current situation ?

Replacement encoders with longer sticks ?
Encoders are this one http://www.mouser.fr/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=PEC11R-4220F-S0024virtualkey65210000virtualkey652-PEC11R-4220F-S24
20 in 4220F is the number of mm.
You can try PEC11R-4225F-S24 or -PEC11R-4230F-S24.

Encoder knobs ? or push buttons ?
Both of them should work fine on the metal case  ???

The e-switch tacs  (http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/e-switch/TACWHT/EG1088-ND/101328) should stick out by 1mm with the metal case...  compared to 3 or 4 with the plexy case.
But 1mm is enough and give a pleasant feel to my opinion.
I'm not sure you cand find "compatible" taller ones.

preenfm2 and preenfm3 / Re: Left output not working
« on: October 26, 2016, 11:37:03 PM »
If one of the output works, that should not be to hard to have the other one ;)

Double check soldering points around the 2 x 22uF electrolityc capacitors and the 6 points of the volume pot.
Then the op amp and all the capacitor and resistors around it are also part of the audio path.

You can read this thread :
http://ixox.fr/forum/index.php?topic=63509.0
You'll get info about the audio path and what soldering to check.

Let me know if you find something...

I'm not sure what you're trying to do.

There is no actual sequencer in the preenfm2.

There are some steps sequencers, LFOs, and arpegiator, which all can be synced to an external midi clock.
The blinking note on the display should show up and blink synchronized to your ext midi clock.

The LFO and step sequencer "Freq" must be set to one of the MC values.
MV values are after all the regular tempo bps.

The argpegiator clock must be set to "Ext" to use the external midi clock.

I first tried to keep reasonable the number of matrix destinations.

The number of sound when you need to modify independentaly each of the 6 mixes through the matrix must not been huge.

IM5 could be usefull though.

preenfm2 and preenfm3 / Re: what exactly are the 4 leds for?
« on: October 23, 2016, 07:53:10 PM »

Not much excepting blinking in sync with any external midi clock.

"All operators decay" has been in the matrix destinations since 2.05.
I know i need to update the doc  ;)

preenfm2 and preenfm3 / Re: Pulse Width Modulation for Square?
« on: October 23, 2016, 07:48:48 PM »

Preenfm2 use only precomputed waveforms for performance reason.
So PWM would not be straightforward to add.

I'm not sure adding waveform that people usually find in "substractive synth" would make it a better FM synth.

Automating from a Daw ?
Did you record and replay or did you draw the CC directly ?

Seems like you sent out of range values for the automation...

preenfm2 and preenfm3 / Re: Through-Zero FM?
« on: October 19, 2016, 08:59:04 AM »
Fortunately all FM synth don't sound like their "Not through zero" examples.

I don't know how that would translate to digital world. I would have to see the maths behind that.

Nice to read it's now working fine and that you could backup your files.

Yes, the preenfm2 is more sensitive to USB drive than a computer.

The preenfm2 firmware uses the Standard Peripheral Libraries by ST, and  many parts would require to be rewritten to work with the  STM32F7 :
http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/SPLReinstatement

Substractive synth requires FX as the base of their synthesis.
That's not the case of FM synths  ;)
The FX section of the preenfm2 have been added rather late in its life.

A delay would requires memory which the stm32F* don't have.

I admit a preenfm2 with 4 different outputs would be better  :)
