Actually after writing that I realised that maybe the FM patents have expired. They're for 25 years?

Although this seems to suggest that FM on hardware is covered by the patent, software isn't covered, hence FM8. Although PreenFM is running software on a computer, it's not an FM IC.

"Fourth, while Yamaha owned the patent on hardware-based FM, which meant that until recently no other manufacturer could offer competing FM instruments, nobody owns FM when it's running on a computer. Each developer can put a fresh spin on the FM concept."

CSound apparently can render DX7 sounds, or is it converting sounds to DX7 format?

"CSound also has opcodes for producing DX7 sounds."

I read about the quirky settings thing here:

One thing I would worry about if the DX7 translation was too perfect is Yamaha taking notice. Not sure how likely that would be, but you know how lawsuit mad companies are these days.

The USB cable is the most problematic part of the build. Although mine only seemed to work after resoldering the USB socket (power worked but not data).

One thing that would help is if the USB pins had their actual signal type mentioned on the silkscreen. So D- and D+ as well as 2 and 3. Or just put that information on the website somewhere.

I also read that people used odd settings (but inaudible ones) as a sort of watermark so they knew if their patches were being copied.

The DX7 has 32 algos, but Preen FM2 has 27, not sure how much of a problem that is.

The DX7 feature is useful, but to be fair if you want the perfect DX7 sound there are plenty of ways of getting it. I'd much prefer to move forward than just keep emulating the past.

I had a bit of trouble with my own USB cable.

For flashing I connected a cable directly to the CERB.

Ah. It's not initialising right?

Also, did you remove JMP3?

Once flashed you remove that jumper so it boots as normal.

Does your USB stick flash as if it is being accessed? if you are in DFU mode the light tends to flash once and then go out. Mine flashes a few times upon normal bootup before going to an idle state.

Mine's a Sandisk like this one, it glows when idle. (I put some tape on the back as a safety precaution ;))

Thanks. It's all working now.

There is some high end sounds, these may be just part of the patch (I'm not sure).

I put some 120k in temporarily (I bought 4 and they all measured 119.7k though) and will replace with the precision 115k when they arrive.

I've yet to listen to it through some decent speakers, but there seems to be a lot more precision in the parameters.

It does prompt you to install some command line utils which it downloads from Apple. So ensure you accept that and wait for it to finish installing before continuing with the command line script.

57
Do it with the Brew mechanism, it was dead easy.

http://brew.sh/index.html

Run the script.

Once it's all done

'brew install dfu-util'

Then run DFU util as per instructions.

In the end my DAC chipped arrived and is the surface mount version :( pretty sure it looked like a DIL in the photo. So I can wait for the correct 115k resistors to arrive.

Once you flash the bootloader and firmware is the internal USB cable needed? only the one I made didn't work.

There was me forgetting the tolerances of the various resistor types :)

I'll just use some 120k for now then, i'll solder them in with long leads so I can pull them out and replace with 115k when they arrive.

Thanks :)

preenfm2 and preenfm3 / 115k resistors

I'm building my Preen 2 from just the PCB and I forgot to order the 115k resistors. My local store only does 110k or 120k.

Will either of those values do? the tolerance of 5% means a 115k could be 109.25k or 120.75k anyway.
