changing patches
« on: March 18, 2014, 02:31:30 AM »
Hi,
I have only been using my PreenFM2 for about a week on and off, and really enjoy it. I have what amounts to a silly question: Using the control surface, how do I change patches, other than loading them off the USB stick?

i.e. is there a bank of 128 patches like on the Shruthi, or is it just load the patch you like off the USB stick?

Hi,

I'm not sure i understand your question.
What is the problem loading the presets from the USB stick ?

There are several banks you should see under load menu:
http://ixox.fr/preenfm2/manual/menu-mode/

The banks must be installed in the /pfm2 of your USB drive which must be formated in FAT32.
http://ixox.fr/preenfm2/manual/usb-drive/

Download the banks here :
http://ixox.fr/preenfm2/download/

Don't forget to also copy the DX7 sysex files in /pfm2/DX7.

Does that answer your question ?

Xavier

There is no on-board memory for patch banks, that's what the USB stick does. It's really the same thing, it's just a different storage location.

Hi,
Thank you both very much. I have the patches on the USB stick and easily load them. The amount of storage is awesome.

@xavier I had intended to ask was there something more akin to a typical onboard patch memory. If I send the unit a program change, how would it respond? Would it try and load the next patch from the USB stick?

You're right, programm change and bank select should work.
I'm not sure they currently work, i'll check that.
Thanks

Great to hear you're going to implement program changes.
Just another thought:
It would be great if it's possible to switch preen presets as well as dx7 presets, maybe different Bank Select MSB/LSB combinations for Preen/Dx7 presets?
eg.
MSB=0, LSB=Preen Bank, PC=Preen Preset
MSB=1, LSB=DX7 Bank, PC=DX7 Preset

just my two cents...

PS: I really like this synth, just got it for a week but it's great!!

Thanks i'm glad you like it.

This is exactly what i've done ;-)
MSB=0 => LSB=Prenfm bank number
MSB=1 => LSB=Combo number
MSB=2 => LSB=DX7 bank 0->127
MSB=3 => LSB=DX7 bank 128->255
(MSB = CC#32 / LSB = CC#0)

Then program change load the preset for the instrument that listen to the midi channel of the program change.
(except for Combo where all The 4 instruments are loaded).

Will upload the firmware tonight or tomorrow.

Let me know if you find any bugs... specially with the loading from the menu that i had to rework.

Thanks

Thanks. I just updated.
It seems to work fine on mine. I have not gone crazy trying every MSB, but for the DX7 patches it worked.

Again, thanks for the awesome work!!

Cool... you're welcome.
Keep on posting what you think is missing in the preenfm2  :)

Hi!

Just a word about the Program Changes messages, as I'm now preparing a live set including the PreenFM2.

I realized that my PreenFM2 had troubles to receive both MSB and LSB messages in one pass, and i have to stop the track and do a second CC send to have the correct patch loaded (i mainly use two different banks). The CC messages are sent by my Pyramid sequencer, but don't know if the problem is coming from the sequencer or the synth. Does anyone have the same problem?

It makes impossible to have a correct program change in the middle of a track, but i found a workaround : I created a third bank containing only the sounds I need for my live set, and renamed this bank to be sure it has the "0" number amongst all the banks contained in my PreenFM2.
Now i found that to load a sound from thi first bank, the PreenFM2 doesn't need to receive a MSB message. So the CC change work now with only sending the bank number (LSB) with CC#0 and the Program Change number.

If i need a combo, I will have to do the same for each of the 4 PreenFM2 instrument, with their own midi channel.

Sorry i'm super late to reply here.

I don't uderstand what MSB and LSB message you're talking about.
CC#0 and CC#32 as describe here ?
http://ixox.fr/preenfm2/manual/midi/

Did you look in a midi monitor what you're pyramid is sending ?
