Hello! Questions before I buy the Preenfm3
« on: April 18, 2022, 12:32:54 AM »
Hello guys, thanks so much for the add.  :)

I am a bit of a noob here to this product and synths in general, so apologies is these questions are redundant! If there is some resource I can read that answers these, I would kindly ask for a link so I don't waste people's time.

I am currently looking into using the PreenFM3 in conjunction with a Arturia Keystep Pro.

Questions:

 • Is there a full manual that explains how the UI works on the PreenFM3?
 • How do you change parameters such as filter, attack, decay etc? Would it be possible to control these parameters via something like the Key step pro via MIDI?
 • Would user creates patches available online designed for the DX7 or Korg Volca FM (as seen for example here: http://oscillatorsink.com) to be used on the FM3? As I understand it, the sounds may differ slightly, but they will work, right?
 • Does the FM3 respond or can be programmed to respond to aftertouch via MIDI?
 • Why hasn't anyone uploaded a video tutorial on how to use the FM3 yet or given anything more than a fleeting demo of it's utility and capability?

Thanks so much for any responses, I am currently looking into buying this as my first synth to use in a live setup and it seems like it would be right up my alley in terms of the sounds I've heard and what I'm looking for.

Thanks again!

Hi,

Le's try to answer you questions  :)

Is there a full manual that explains how the UI works on the PreenFM3?

Documentation takes a lot of time, and it is for sure the weak part of the preenfm family.
https://github.com/Ixox/preenfm3/wiki/Quickstart
This as well as the link on the right is the main documentation that currently exists.

How do you change parameters such as filter, attack, decay etc? Would it be possible to control these parameters via something like the Key step pro via MIDI?[/li]
Midi implementation is compatible with preenfm2, so the doc is here :
https://ixox.fr/preenfm2/preenfm/midi/

The preenfm3 is in addition MPE compatible, and has a few more midi CC to reacts to the built-in sequencer starts / Stop.

Would user creates patches available online designed for the DX7 or Korg Volca FM (as seen for example here: http://oscillatorsink.com) to be used on the FM3? As I understand it, the sounds may differ slightly, but they will work, right?[/li]
My opinion on the preen vs DX7  :
https://github.com/Ixox/preenfm3/wiki/FAQ

Does the FM3 respond or can be programmed to respond to aftertouch via MIDI?[/li]
Aftertouch as well as polyphonic aftertouch are both suported.

Why hasn't anyone uploaded a video tutorial on how to use the FM3 yet or given anything more than a fleeting demo of it's utility and capability?[/li]
I would love to have one too :)
I want to make one at some point, i but always push it....
The sales of the preenfm are very far from the sales of big company synth you can buy on the web. So it still has not reach someone who wants/has time to make a tutorial.

Best,
Xavier

Thanks for the reply Xavier!

I really appreciate it. Maybe this might be a synth for me then after all! I am willing to take a chance on it, since it has so much capability packed into such a small unit and the potential seems so limitless on paper... the only scary thing is knowing whether or not I might end up with something that works for me or not.

Who knows? It seems like everyone who has one is pretty satisfied at the moment?

Does the unit come with a standard set of patches? How many can the unit hold?

I'm quite happy with my unit so far, it has some several built in presets, the "elements" bank is pretty good but you (or at least I) will want to build your own, it is pretty easy with the screen. The UI is quite self-explanatory. It should be noted that it really mutates and mangles DX7 patches, some in really cool and fun ways. I think what it does to DX7 patches is cool.

I'm in the exact same situation as you. Barely an demos, let alone just jams with the PFM3. Funnily I also own a Keystep Pro xD

Bought one anyways, which will arrive in one week. I'm so excited!
