FM3 freezing/ lock up glitch
« on: June 05, 2023, 06:46:08 PM »
I'm finding that I've I go to load a patch immediately after powering up and go to edit it, my fm3 freezes and locks up. It won't do anything until I unplug it and plug it back in.

If I turn on the unit and move around the menus a bit before loading a patch, it works fine.

Running firmware 1.0

Anyone else finding this?

I'll take a look at that asap. Thanks for the video.
Do you have the problem only when importing DX7 sysex patch ?

Nope, it happens when loading any patch or mixer.

Power on -> Menu -> Preset -> Load -> Load Patch -> Edit = Freeze

Power on -> Menu -> Preset -> DX7 -> Load -> Edit = Freeze

Power on -> Menu -> Mixer -> Load -> Load Mixer -> Edit = Freeze

Ok, I just reflashed the firmware 1.00 and now it freezes anytime I press "Edit" and is seemingly unusable...

It's been working fine for a week and now it's dead. I'm not really sure how. Really gutted.

Would be interesting to know if it works fine with previous official firmware 0.110 ?
It's possible that editing env with the previous beta make things unstable with 1.0.

1. Can you rename the "mix.dlf" on the SD card (mix2.dfl or something like that, it won't be read anymore)?
That's the default mixer that is loaded.
Rename and not delete in case you want to get it back.

2. You can copy mix.dlf from https://github.com/Ixox/preenfm3/releases/download/v0.105/pfm3_SD.zip
if you want to have some sounds loaded when you turn on your preenfm.

3. If that's not enough :
On Your SD Card : rename "pfm3/" into "pfm3_old/" and copy the content on your computer to make a backup.
Then put he "pfm3/" folder from the zip above.

4. An other idea (i've never seen) : corrupted firmware.
No worry, you can ALWAYS flash the firmware. From the pfm3 bootloader or directly with DFU mode.
But if that's the case, you should use an other SD card.

Hiya, thanks for the post.

I loaded firmware 0.110 onto the machine, no change, crashed any time I pressed "EDIT"

I tried turning the machine on with no SD card inserted, crashed as soon as I pressed EDIT.

Reformatted the SD card, installed the SD image from the 0.105 firmware. Turn on, load patch, freezes.

If it was the SD card, is there any reason for the "edit" button to lock up the machine with no SD card inserted running .110 firmware?

That's worrying.
You saw the "SD card error #-6#" message ?
All instruments are then set to "sound"  ?
And it crashes when you press edit ?

Unless you flash a corrupted firmware from the SD card.

When you say you "loaded" 0.110, you mean you flashed it ? You can see v0.110 in the top right of the menu ?
Just to make sure you did not just copy the firmware to the SD card.

Yeah, I flashed it properly and that's the version that shows on screen.

Yup, I get the SD card error, a mixer page with everything set to sound, press Edit, it locks up.

Can upload a video if it helps but it doesn't show anything more than I describe

Unless you flash a corrupted firmware from the SD card.

I downloaded a fresh copy so I can't see how it would be corrupted?

That's worrying.

Welp, if I wasn't worried before, I am now...

I'll try flashing firmware tomorrow with a different card certainly, but it's a very specific error to be caused by an SD card identically over four firmware flashes and even with the SD card not inserted.  I really doubt it's the card tbh

Things to try that could help understanding what the problem is :

. Unplug midi jack
. Try with a different power supply (You use Dc in 9v ?)
. Power over usb
. Flash with a different SD card (and different power suply)

. Does it only freezes in edit mode ?  All mixer pages and the sequencer does work ?

No worry, if we don't find any solution, i'll swap yours with a working board.

EDITED : oh last question : does the blue led on the back stop blinking when it crashes ?

Ok, got a bit of time before work today and tried the following.

Unlugged MIDI in.

Removed 9v supply and swapped over to usb power.

Flashed firmware 0.110 using a different SD card under usb power.

Removed SD card.

Turned on, SD card error showed, mixer, pressed "edit", unit froze.

Turned off.

Turned on, SD card error showed, went through the mixer screens with no problem, then pressed edit, unit seemed to work without freezing.

Turned off.

Turned on, SD card error showed, mixer, pressed "edit", unit froze.

I recorded this and can upload the video later for you if you need me to.

When you say the led on the back of the board do I need to take it out of the case to see it? Not sure which led you mean

The blue led on the back.
It's blinking while the engine is running.

Do you get sound after it does not respond ?
I want to make sure it's not a TFT problem.
You can also try "MENU" + "-" to reset the TFT.
I don't expect it to work, but i want to be 100% sure, it's a crash and not a TFT lock.

Next steps :
. Put it out of the box.
. Double check the soldering points (TFT, SD card, and connection to the control board on the control board AND on the main board)
Latest step :
. Send it to me, i'll take a look, and replace the main board if it's really broker.
