Seems to me there was a thread on the Mutable forum regarding a fix for the OLED noise involving soldering a cap across a pair of pins on the screen.  Don't remember the details...

There is a difference in the sound engines of the Yamaha synths and the Preen.  Yamaha synths use Phase Modulation while Preen uses Frequency Modulation.  MY understanding is that feedback is easy with Phase Mod but not so much with Freq Mod...

Perfect Xavier, thanks! I will check the diode and double check all components tonight.

No joy. Xavier, can you post a diagram of the wiring from the MIDI DIN connectors to the headers on the board?  I'm not sure I could really see that from the pictures in the manual...

I think I did at one point because the labels on the headers were confusing.  But I didn't with the new optocoupler.  Good call, I'll try it again tonight...

Built the latest version Preen with metal case. Build was easy, the case comes together nicely. It sounds wonderful, maybe a little better than the original FM2? Smoother?

One issue: I can't get MIDI in to work through the DIN connector. USB works very well, nothing through MIDI DIN. I switched the opto coupler and OpAmp originally, so I also tried another coupler (the one from my other Preen) with no luck.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Mike

I would add it to the 'nice to have' list, not annoying :)

Is there a way to change the default sound that comes up at boot time? Haven't been able to figure out if that's possible...

Thanks!

Mike

One more tip: use the filter to round off the top a bit.  Works nicely with some patches :)

Yes, you can do this as the Preen has 4 instruments available simultaneously.  It can also be configured to listen for external MIDI, though I'm not 100% sure the internal sequencer is listening for Start/Stop.

There is no on-board memory for patch banks, that's what the USB stick does. It's really the same thing, it's just a different storage location.

I hear you, I'll try switching them again!

No, MIDI over USB does not work, at least not from my computer to the PreenFM.  Since the OS does not recognize it there is no way to send anything to it. I've checked the cable and in fact there is continuity from the pins to the USB processor (i forget the name of it, CERBsomething?) with the cable connected. I'll check the docs as you suggested...
